My Sister and Me

I rented a car the last week in October for a three week hiatus to Western NY. The first two weeks were spent on a turkey hunting trip in Allegany State Park with my sister and the last week I visited with my family.

Before I get into details, I want to thank Mr. Jim Cayton, Alamo City Station Manger, for his hospitality and terrific service he provided at the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport. Driving away from New Bern I was ready for a much needed break from technology and a busy life. It was nice to go “off the grid” where no one could call me and I couldn’t access the Internet. Only my direct family knew where I was.

Believe it or not, sitting around the campfire; hiking to the top of a mountain; or sitting as still as I could in 30 degree weather for hours waiting for a turkey to come along; I was “Stress Free”!

I’m a true believer that getting back to nature will make any of my troubles go away and helps to rejuvenate my brain to come up with new ideas that have been suppressed by a daily routine.

Wondering about the fun part? We saw a flock of turkeys, a bear, a porcupine, deer, and other animals, but I have to admit that most of the encounters were from driving thru the park and we were in the comforts of a vehicle. We didn’t get a turkey, but some things aren’t meant to be!

My Brother-in-Law, Two Sisters, and Me

The fun part was spending time with my family and looking at old relics and photos that my folks have saved from their parents! Growing up in an English/Irish family with parents born in the 1920s, I don’t recall learning about our family’s history until recently. It was very nice to sit back and look at old photos and listen to the history behind the pictures.

I hope some viewers will read this and realize it’s time to reminisce about family or take time out of your busy schedule and visit the Croatan National Forest or take a lunch break along New Bern’s Riverwalk!

Whatever your pleasure, don’t let the hustle and bustle of a busy life make you forget about the important things in life!
