October 8:  “Let’s Talk About It – Affirming Aging.”  The month’s featured selection is “Water For Elephants,” by Sara Gruen.  The discussion will be led by visiting scholar Lucinda MacKethan, retired, North Carolina State University.  Advanced registration is required and the book is available at the library.  The program is made possible by funding from the NC Humanities Council.  Hayden H. October 23:  “Lunch ‘n Learn – Kenneth Capps, author of Forgiving Waters.  In a Texas time when cattle were more common than houses and racial division was both expected and tolerated, Beauregard (Bo) Lee Kelso learned at an early age some painful truths about the breaking and mending of souls.  Now, at the age of 83, Bo struggles with decisions of the past that won’t allow him peace of mind; but, through the friendship of two young boys, Bo finds his peace.  Bring a brown bag lunch, and some tissues!  Beverages and desserts will be served.  Free and open to the public.  Forgiving Waters will be available for sale and autographing.  Hayden H. October 30:  The Friends of the New Bern Public Library present “Ghosts of New Bern.”  Join Joe and Joyce O’Callahan, authors of Ghosts of New Bern as they share some of the old city’s mysteries, myths and legends in an entertaining one-hour guided arm-chair tour.  Explore why New Bern is host to so many unexplained happenings and unsolved mysteries.  Do ghosts really inhabit some of the city’s buildings and prowl its streets?  You’ll be the judge!  Free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served.  Hayden H.
