Visit the New Bern Historical Society for fun-filled and educational programs!

Thea Kincaid and I enjoyed our visit with Nelson McDaniel, President of the New Bern Historical Society during our monthly video “Shout outs”.

New Bern Now has been promoting the New Bern Historical Society for four years, but we didn’t realize that they have 600 volunteers and were only funded locally. Since they don’t receive government funding, they rely solely on our community for financial and volunteer support.

The Historical Society has numerous events throughout the year to include Legends in Concert, the New Bern’s Spring Historic Homes and Garden tour, Earl of Craven Questers tour of Cedar Grove Cemetery, tours of the New Bern Civil War Battlefield Park, along with Ghost Walk “Spirited Through Time” in the Fall.

They are constantly striving to teach people about New Bern’s 300+ years of history by offering fun and interesting programs like the Lunch and Learn, Day Trips, School programs, along with many others!

They also collect items throughout the year for the Knights of Columbus Attic-Basement-Closet (ABC) Yard Sales.

For more information, please visit the New Bern Historical Society in the Attmore-Oliver House and Gardens at 411 Broad St., call 252-638-8558, or check out their website.

Special thanks to Nelson McDaniel for taking time to tell us about the Historical Society’s efforts! Good luck to Nelson as he’s preparing for the upcoming “Dancing with the Stars” special fundraising event presented by the Ratio Theatre Company on May 11, 2013.
