CCHC Foundation Journey of Hope Cancer Support Center and CCHC New Bern Cancer Care will present a special free event, “Laughter for the Journey,” in recognition of the 27th annual National Cancer Survivors Day. This local survivor celebration will be held on Sunday, June 1st, in the Orringer Auditorium on Craven Community College’s New Bern campus, 2-4 p.m.

“Laughter for the Journey” event will celebrate cancer survivors through fun and laughter. Planned performances and activities include: comedienne Mary Lou Infinito, special performance video by CCHC New Bern Cancer Care staff and physicians, free photos courtesy of Crystal Coast Photo Booth, song by cancer survivor Anthony Stevenson, and encouraging and humorous cancer treatment stories by survivors. Cancer survivors, families, caregivers are invited. Light refreshments will be served.

“From the day a person is diagnosed with cancer, they are a survivor. We want to honor and celebrate all survivors on National Cancer Survivors Day. We chose the ‘Laughter for the Journey’ theme for the event as a way of providing a release through humor. Cancer patients deal with a great amount of stress so our hope is to provide an afternoon of laughter and encouragement,” said Kim Hess, nurse practitioner at CCHC New Bern Cancer Care and a founding board member of CCHC Foundation Journey of Hope Cancer Support Center.

“I plan on singing a gospel song at the survivors day event as a way to give back by providing uplifting encouragement to other cancer patients because I know what it feels like to be down and need support from others,” said Anthony Stevenson, a 43-year old cancer patient, husband, father of six children and Trader Construction employee.  Stevenson is currently undergoing treatment for a second cancer diagnosis. Stevenson’s first diagnosis was in 2009. Stevenson said, “My daughters sing and dance to make me laugh whenever I am feeling bad or down. These moments help keep me motivated to push in my fight with cancer.”

“Cancer impacts our patients in ways that we will never fully understand. They fight incredibly hard thought their treatment, and then live with the concern that the cancer will come back. It takes amazing courage to be a cancer survivor.  That courage is one of the many reasons why we support our patients by celebrating National Cancer Survivor Day,” said Dr. Chris Taylor, oncologist at CCHC New Bern Cancer Care.

“Laughter for the Journey” National Cancer Survivors Day event is free and open to the public. Registration for the event can be found on the Foundation’s website: www.cchcfoundation.org
