The New Bern Civitan Club is working in our community to help those in need.  The Club contributes to over 40 charities and has over 25 projects going on throughout the year.  In River Bend, we have just completed a Fall Festival of Fun and Magic Show for the residents of the RHA Health Services Facility.  Last June, we sponsored a Senior Prom for RHA and several other group homes for developmentally disabled adults in the community.  We do a yearly fishing derby and spring lunch for this same population and in March, we will be sponsoring a Western theme party for the RHA residents.

The money for all of these projects comes from fund raisers throughout the year.  Our largest fund raisers occur in the months of November and December.  This is where you, the public, come in.  We need your support by:

* buying your live Christmas trees from us. Our tree lot will open on Monday, November 21 next to Moore’s BBQ on Rte. 17 at 3616 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.  We will be selling Christmas trees, wreaths and peanuts.  Hours of operation will be Sun. thru Fri. 11am to 8pm and Sat. 9am to 9pm. Tree Lot Chairman is Gary Todd and he may be reached at 288-5502.

* buying our peanuts – HUBS peanuts from Virginia in salted, unsalted, chocolate covered and toffee covered.  We will sell them at our tree lot and at the Farmer’s Market every Saturday in November and December. Peanut sales Chairman is Frank Court – 633-2372.

* buying Claxton fruit cakes at our local grocery stores. Our Club gets a portion of the sales for these products.

The money raised from these sales go to LOCAL charities like the ones stated above.  We give monetary donations to RCS, Merci Clinic, Coastal Carolina Women’s Shelter, Salvation Army, Special Olympics and many more.  Our big Christmas celebration takes place at the Tree Lot the first part of December.  “Santa Land” sees over 180 children from the Craven County Pre-K and Family Literacy Program (for children who are disabled, limited English proficiency, economically disadvantaged and physically/emotionally delayed) They receive stuffed animals, school supplies, hats, scarves, gloves/mittens and pictures of themselves with Santa.  This program has been in existence for 8 years.  We are accepting donations of children’s new hats, gloves, scarves or mittens and small, new or gently used stuffed animals for this year’s Santa Land.  Please contact Maureen Comer, 636-2217 for donation pick up.

In June of 2017, we will hold our third annual Yard Sale.  If you have items you want to donate for this sale, you may contact Sharyn Foster at 635-1426.

We are a busy and active Club and we are always looking for new members to share the joy of working for those in our community who need support or help.  The Club was meeting at the Golden Corral and will be selecting a new site to meet shortly. Please join us for lunch sometime by calling our membership chair, Helen Shine at 637-6612. She will inform you where we are meeting.

We thank you for all of your help and support in the past and we look forward to your continued participation in the future.
