Habitat for Humanity of Craven County plans Two Special Events in November

Habitat for Humanity of Craven CountyHabitat for Humanity of Craven County invites the community to attend two special events in November to celebrate new homes with two families in New Bern.

On Sunday, November 12, Habitat for Humanity of Craven County will dedicate a home at 1109 Biddle Street with the family of Pee Koh and Somchai Chetthakun. “We thank Publix Supermarket Charities for their generous sponsorship of this home” said Mike Williams, Executive Director of Habitat Craven County. “With support from businesses like Publix Supermarkets, and the commitment of community volunteers, we were able to build this 62nd home in Craven County,” he said.

The dedication will begin at 3:00 pm and include a tour of the home and refreshments. Construction on this home began when students from four different colleges came during March 2017 to volunteer on a build site as part of Habitat for Humanity’s annual Collegiate Challenge. Additional volunteers from Publix, Keller-Williams Realty, area churches, Cherry Point Marines, Epiphany students, Habitat for Humanity’s DieHards group, and other volunteers also contributed over 1000 hours on this home.

On Tuesday, November 14, at 8:30 am, Habitat for Humanity of Craven County will be “Raising the Roof “for home #63 at 614 Third Avenue. The Way family is working along-side volunteers on building their home and look forward to meeting new neighbors from the community.

Since its founding in 1989, Habitat for Humanity of Craven County has finished new construction or rehabilitation of 62 homes, impacting 92 adults and more than 110 children. Qualified families are required to invest 300 hours of “sweat equity” during the building of their home and are responsible for paying the mortgage, insurance, and taxes upon its completion. So far, thirteen families have paid off the mortgage on their homes. “Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program is a hand-up, not a hand-out,” explained Williams. “We work with the family to build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter,” he said.

The offices and ReStore are located at 930 Pollock Street in New Bern. Anyone interested in volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Craven County is encouraged to call 252-633-9599 for further information.
