>April Happenings at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library

>April 10 –  “My Journey to Literacy.”  Lunch ‘n Learn with Earl Mills, author of “From Illiterate to Poet.”  Free and open to the public.  Bring a brown bag lunch.  Desserts and beverages will be served.  Hayden H. Jones Auditorium.  12:00 noon.

April 11 – Bingo Round the Library!  Come join Sue for a rousing hour of Bingo!  Free and open to the public.  Prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be served.  Hayden H. Jones Auditorium.  1:00 p.m.

April 14 – “Slave Voices of North Carolina,” presented by Dr. Lucinda MacKethan.  Dr. MacKethan’s presentation will introduce the personal narratives, letters, poetry and interviews of North Carolina slaves and discuss how these works fill in a lost or often distorted picture of slavery in our state before the Civil War.  Hayden H. Jones Auditorium.  2:00 p.m.

April 16 – “Let’s Talk About It” Book Discussion Series.  This session, the last in the series, is “War and Freedom.”  The visiting scholar, Dr. Gerald Prokopowicz, Chair of the History Department at ECU, will lead the discussion of America’s War Anthology, part five.  Advanced registration is required.  The book is available at the Library. Hayden H. Jones Auditorium.  7:00 p.m.

April 17 – Facebook 101 Computer Class.  Advanced registration is required. Conference Room.  2:15 p.m.

April 17 – Holocaust Remembrance Day Program.  A commemoration to memorialize the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust.  Free and open to the public.  Sponsored in partnership with Temple B’nai Sholem.  Free and open to the public. Hayden H. Jones Auditorium.  7:00 p.m.

April 21 – Saturday Afternoon at the Movies.  This month’s featured film is “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” A middle-aged husband’s life changes dramatically when his wife asks him for a divorce. He seeks to rediscover his manhood with the help of a new-found friend Jacob, learning to pick up girls at bars. This movie is rated PG-13.  Free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served. Hayden H. Jones Auditorium.  2:15 p.m.

April 23 – Microsoft Word Computer Class.  Advanced registration is required.  Conference Room.  2:15 p.m.

April 30 – Yahoo!  Email Computer Class.  Advanced registration is required.  Conference Room. 2:15 p.m.

Editor-in-Chief, Wendy Card, founded New Bern Now in April 2009. There were a number of reasons she developed the website. While stationed in Washington DC, she had 30 days to transfer to Naval Hospital Cherry Point and didn’t know much about the area. She was frustrated because there wasn’t a central location on the Internet for information about New Bern. Wendy retired from the Navy in Oct 2007. When our economy dived, she was trying to find her way in life and decided to give back to the community by creating a website that provided a “One Stop, Information Shop” to help people find out what’s happening in our community along with creating a free business listing to help business owners who couldn’t afford to advertise.
