Registration for Pre-Kindergarten and Head Start Programs

Craven County Schools and Coastal Community Action, Inc. will be holding a registration for four year olds for the NC Pre-Kindergarten Program (previously called More at Four Pre-K) and Head Start Program for the 2012-2013 school year in Havelock on June 12, 2012, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 a.m. at Graham Barden Elementary.  Parents should bring their child’s official birth certificate, as well as proof of family income.  It is not necessary for the child to be present at this registration.

Children must be four years old on or before August 31, 2012, to qualify for the NC Pre-Kindergarten Program.  Head Start accepts younger children as well as four year olds. The NC Pre-Kindergarten Program and the Head Start Program are both high quality programs and are designed for children who may be at risk, in order to prepare them for kindergarten.

Participants will be selected based on program criteria, which includes family income.  Applicants will be notified of the selection at a later date.  There is no cost to families who are selected to participate.

NC Pre-Kindergarten classes are located in various sites across Craven County, including Excel Learning CenterVII, Child Care Network #77A and Duffyfield Child Development Center in New Bern; Godette Child Development Center in Havelock; and two public schools in western Craven County, Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary and James W. Smith Elementary.   In addition to the Godette and Duffyfield Centers, the Head Start Program in Craven County includes F.R. Danyus Child Development Center and Charles F. Taylor Child Development Center, which are located in New Bern.

The Craven County NC- Pre-Kindergarten Program is supported by the Division of Child Development and Early Education and by local community organizations, including Craven County Schools, Craven Smart Start, Coastal Community Action Head Start and private child care centers.

About New Bern Now
Editor-in-Chief, Wendy Card, founded New Bern Now in April 2009. There were a number of reasons she developed the website. While stationed in Washington DC, she had 30 days to transfer to Naval Hospital Cherry Point and didn’t know much about the area. She was frustrated because there wasn’t a central location on the Internet for information about New Bern. Wendy retired from the Navy in Oct 2007. When our economy dived, she was trying to find her way in life and decided to give back to the community by creating a website that provided a “One Stop, Information Shop” to help people find out what’s happening in our community along with creating a free business listing to help business owners who couldn’t afford to advertise.
