Coni Minneci – “A to Z: An Historical Survey of Women Artists” Exhibit

“Cindy Sherman” by Coni Minneci

Artwalk Reception: Friday, June 8th, 2012, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Coni Minneci’s recent series “A to Z Women Artists”, compelling in both its artistry and concept, fit squarely in a movement in recent decades to research and represent the contributions of women artists – a class of artists who have been largely under -recognized and under-documented.

The premise of this series is deceptively simple – 26 women artists, (26) 9 x 12 oil paintings – each containing a pear. The intimate scale of each work references the roots of still life genre paintings and the shape of a pear is frequently associated with a specific female body type. This is where the simplicity ends as Minneci mines the research she has compiled and constructs highly imaginative solutions for each painting that are richly laden with metaphor and meaning and occasional hints of humor and irony.

Minneci’s project is very relevant and worthwhile. It provides viewers with an opportunity to discover several relatively obscure artists – women who remained unknown because they were women – and serves as a reminder of women artist such as Judy Chicago, Susan Rothengerg, Cindy Sherman and others who played critical roles in shaping the art history of the Western worlds.

About New Bern Now
Editor-in-Chief, Wendy Card, founded New Bern Now in April 2009. There were a number of reasons she developed the website. While stationed in Washington DC, she had 30 days to transfer to Naval Hospital Cherry Point and didn’t know much about the area. She was frustrated because there wasn’t a central location on the Internet for information about New Bern. Wendy retired from the Navy in Oct 2007. When our economy dived, she was trying to find her way in life and decided to give back to the community by creating a website that provided a “One Stop, Information Shop” to help people find out what’s happening in our community along with creating a free business listing to help business owners who couldn’t afford to advertise.

  1. Lisa in New Bern says:

I’ve seen some great shows at New Bern Artworks and this show of Coni’s is absolutely a “MUST SEE” if you are an artist and have ever studied art history or if you have ever visited international museums. The tributes that Coni has pulled together in this collection is amazing. I’ve seen Cindy Sherman’s works in many museums and always am touched by the her clever concepts. This show at New Bern Artworks deserves an award for bringing such a blast of historical figures to share with our 301 year old town. Judy Chicago changed the face of the artworld with “The Dinner Party” and Coni is doing it again. Thanks to Wendy for sharing this information.

  2. Hello, Lisa. Thanks for sharing your experiences and information about New Bern Artworks! New Bern is full of all kinds of art and cultural events! – Wendy
