Getting to your Fitness Goals by Kate Horney

fitness_goalsWhat’s your fitness goal? I’m talking about any goal you have set for yourself. Is it to run in the 5k or half marathon we have in New Bern? Is it to fit into that old swimsuit you haven’t been able to for year? Or maybe it’s to show fitness happens at any age?

Whatever it is, we all seem to have some trouble getting there. Usually we know where we are, and where we want to go, but how to get from point A to point B?

Enter the age-old adage: Consistency is key.

I’ll offer one piece of simple advice that transcends any plan or strategy: don’t give up. Yep, that’s it. Stay the course and be consistent. How is this helpful? Let me flesh it out a little…

Consistency requires patience and tolerance for schedules.

This is something that I’m still working on myself – ask anyone close to me and they’ll tell you that I’ve always been one to have a lack of patience and an urge for impulsivity! Needless to say, I’ve learned the hard way when it comes to consistency and fitness. However, something that I have learned through all of my trials and errors is that if you want to see result, then day-in and day-out you have to follow your workout schedule, adhere to your meal plan or get to your training ride.

Practice consistency.

This is the main point. You have to train to be consistent as you train for anything else. Don’t expect perfection of yourself, especially if you are just starting out. Work hard to be consistent above all else and let the results follow. This is tough, it is easy to be impatient and to give up the first time we fail, but in order to see through to our goals, you have to stay the course.

Know your triggers.

What helps you stay on track? Take note of it. What doesn’t? Avoid that. If anyone has quit any kind of addiction, you know that triggers are talked about a lot. There are pre-programmed parts of our brain that entice us to act in a certain way. Can you not leave Outback without a bloomin’ onion? Then you might want to avoid Outback while you work to get into that swimsuit. Do you know you getter a better workout when you are with friends? Then set up a regular time.

All of this is about learning yourself and what works. You can’t give up. You must not, I am encouraging you, whatever your goals are, to keep at it. You will make it, I believe it!

Here’s to a healthy, happy and CONSISTENT summer!
