Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Remembrance

Unity MuralMany of us have today off as a day in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. How many of us spend the time reflecting on the sacrifices he made for our Country? Do your children know the impact he had on the future of civil rights in America?

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. grew up during segregation and graduated from Morehouse University. He became the President of the NAACP and the SCLC.

He went on to lead 250,000 people to march on Washington, DC, where he gave his prolific “I have a dream” speech. Dr. King was the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and his actions ultimately influenced the US Supreme Court to enact the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Dr. King knew he would not live to the ripe age as many of us may, but his ambitions to create civil rights and equality for all were more important to him than his life.

It’s time for us to set aside our differences and come together as a Nation as Dr. King dreamed of. If he could do it with the obstacles he faced during those desolate times, we can too!

We cannot let hate to continue to divide us. Please consider learning about each other people’s points of view, cultures, and differences. That’s what makes America so great – the people. If we don’t learn to listen to each other, hate will win, and we will remain divided… and worse.

Join me in paying tribute to Dr. King by opening our minds and hearts to the ideas of others and embrace our differences. Who knows what roads could be paved if we set politics aside and treat each other with respect?

As Maya Angelou said, “We can learn to see each other and see ourselves in each other and recognize that human beings are more alike that we are unalike”. Let’s find that common ground and remember the positive impact Dr. King’s leadership had on the lives of millions of Americans. If he could do it, together, we call all make a difference in uniting our Country! Remember, we are called the “United States” for a reason.
